Elementary Summer Reading
Summer Reading is an integral part of maintaining high academic standards and year-round learning. It also helps foster a love for reading. The list below is an example of the types of reading assignments elementary school students may be required to complete during the summer. As reading lists may change from year to year, it is important to consult with your instructor and check this site closer to the end of the school year for specifics regarding each grade level.
Kindergarten It is recommended that parents get a library card from the public library for your K5 child. Please read to your child every day. You can read Bible stories, good children’s literature, comic strips, grocery lists, bedtime stories, etc. If you make reading a meaningful experience, your child will want to learn to read. You can find the Follett Publishing Company’s series entitled “Just Beginning to Read” and “Beginning to Read” at local bookstores if your child shows a strong interest in learning to read early. 1st grade It is recommended that parents get a library card from the public library. Look for the sections in the library for beginning readers and school basal readers.
